St Augustine
Augustine of Hippo was a Christian theologian and
philosopher. He is considered one of the most important Christian thinker. St
Augustine was the Bishop of Hippo (modern day Algeria) in Numidia (Roman
province of Africa).
He is the most well known Christian Church Father. He wrote works like Confessions and City of God.
Early Life:
Augustine was born in 354 AD in Thagaste (Algeria). His father Patricius was a
pagan, but his mother Monica was a believed Christian.
Augustine studied first in school at Madaurus and then in Carthage. During this time, he lived a happy life and followed Manichaean religion. Augustine decided to live as a priest when he was 31.

Conversion to Christianity and Life
as a Preacher: In 386 AD, Augustine converted to
Christianity. He was baptized with his son, Adeodatus in 387, like he told in
his work, Confessions. In 388, Augustine returned to Africa. His mother Monica
died and after few years, Augustine’s son Adeodatus also died.
Augustine was shocked and he sold his family property and the money acquired was distributed among poor people. His small family home was turned into a monastery for his friends. In 391, Augustine was nominated as a priest in Hippo Regius. In 395, he became Bishop of Hippo.
In 397, Augustine wrote Confessions. After the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410, Augustine wrote ‘The City of God’ to lift the spirits of his fellow Christians.

Later Life
and Death: In his last days, Augustine was
often ill. He spent his final days praying. Augustine died on 28th August, 430.
He was canonized and nominated Doctor of the Church in 1298 by Pope Boniface
VIII. Augustine is considered patron saint of brewers, printers and theologians.

monastero per i suoi amici. Nel 391, Agostino fu nominato sacerdote a Ippona
Regio. Nel 395 divenne vescovo di Ippona.
Nel 397, Agostino
scrisse Le Confessioni. Dopo che i Visigoti saccheggiarono Roma nel 410,
Agostino scrisse "La città di Dio" per sollevare gli spiriti dei suoi
seguaci cristiani.
ANNI DELLA
VECCHIAIA E MORTE: Negli ultimi giorni, Agostino era spesso malato. Trascorse i
suoi ultimi giorni pregando. Agostino morì il 28 agosto del 430. Fu canonizzato
e nominato Dottore della Chiesa nel 1298 da Papa Bonifacio VIII. Agostino è
considerato il santo patrono dei birrai, degli stampatori e dei teologi.
