Sono servi, piuttosto sono uomini. Sono servi, piuttosto persone che vivono come noi. Sono servi. Piuttosto umili amici. Sono servi. Piuttosto compagni di servitù.
Commento
In questa lettera Seneca espone il suo pensiero riguardo ai servi, pensiero umanissimo conforme ai suoi ideali filosofici, i servi sono uomini come tutti, nulla li differenzia dai padroni. Ed è ridicolo, a suo avviso, che i padroni si vergognino di cenare con i loro servi.
“They are slaves - rather, they are human beings. They are slaves - rather, they are people who live as we do. They are slaves - rather, humble friends. They are slaves -rather, fellow slaves.”
In this letter, Seneca sets out his highly humane view of slaves, a view consistent with his philosophical ideals. Slaves are human beings like everyone else; nothing fundamentally distinguishes them from their masters. In his opinion, it is ridiculous for masters to be ashamed to dine with their slaves.
